CHAPTER 29

The following day, back in uniform, Julie, and Officer Jed Moore, rang the doorbell at Ginny and Jonny’s home.

“Good morning,” Ginny said after opening the front door.

“Good morning Mrs. Banks. You probably remember me, Officer Morales, and this is my partner, Officer Moore,” greeted Julie cheerfully. “We’d actually like to speak with your husband if he’s available.”

“Jonny? What do you want with him?” asked the suspicious Ginny.

“We understand that you both frequent gun ranges, so we just want to know if your husband knows of any local person who is a really good shot with a rifle. Do you mind if we step inside?”

“No, that’s okay,” Ginny grudgingly stepped to the side.

“Who’s at the door, Babe?” The three at the door heard.

“The police want to talk to you, Babe,” Ginny answered, as she closed the door behind them.

“What?” Jonny got up from his armchair to find out what was going on. Turning around, there were indeed police officers in his home.

“Mr Banks? We’d just like to ask you a couple of questions, if that’s okay?” Julie inquired.

“Sure, Okay,” replied the uncertain Jonny. “Let me turn down the volume. Take a seat.” He referred to the television and whatever it was he’d been watching.

“Do you want some coffee?” asked Ginny, unhappily.

“No thanks, I think we’re both fine,” Julie looked to her partner, who shook his head, no.

Both the Bankses were dressed very casually in tee shirts and shorts. His was an A’s baseball shirt, and Ginny wore a ‘In n Out Burger’ shirt. Julie thought it might have been some time since neither of the Bankses had dined on burgers, they looked so fit in their shorts, but maybe they worked out after eating fast food.

“We understand, Mr. Banks, that you like to go to the shooting range. Is that true?” asked Jed, once everyone sat down.

“Sure. It’s not against the law is it?” Jonny answered defensively.

“Do you know of any local person who is particularly good with a rifle?” Asked Jed, ignoring Jonny’s comment. “Who maybe wins competitions?”

“Can’t say I do. The ones we come across are mainly pistol shooters. I don’t really know most of them, but Ginny knows them all,” he replied, brightly.

The two officers turned to the now livid, Ginny.

“Like Jonny said, they are pistol shooters,” she commented, giving her husband a look.

“Do you know if Charlie Bedford goes to the range?” Jed continued.

“I think I’ve seen him a couple of times. Can’t say for certain, but I think so,” Ginny answered, searching her memory for someone she could maybe frame.

“We’ve heard that you’re a good marksman, Mr. Banks. With a rifle. Do you own one?” Jed consulted his notes.

“No, I don’t,” Jonny quickly responded.

Noting his discomfort, Jed didn’t push it, instead he followed up with, “You own several weapons. May we see them?”

“Sure, I suppose so. I’ve got nothing to hide,” Jonny stated.

“Whose rifle do you use when you go to the shooting range, Mr. Banks?” Julie wanted to know. “And which ranges do you go to?”

“I just rent whatever is available, and we go to different gun ranges.
